With the buzz of Christmas and New Year a distant memory, winter temperatures and no prospect of a holiday for some time – it’s no wonder that 21 January is billed as the most miserable day of the year.

We asked four of our new SCT coaches on how they keep motivated in the depths of January.

“Always remember your end goal. The feeling of success beats the feeling of giving up!”
Ellie Sadler, SCT coach at Star Rowing Club

“My tip is to have a thermos flask with tea or soup in your bag for after training, so you have something to warm you up nice and quickly after your session.”
Claire Harrison, SCT coach at the Ahoy Centre, Deptford

The feeling of success beats the feeling of giving up!

“This is the best time of year to get lots of new stash. During those cold outings, wrap up wearing all of your new jazzy Christmas layers to stay warm!”
Amy McCarthy, SCT coach at City of Sunderland Rowing Club

“Set small incremental targets, while working towards greater goals, and always ask yourself why you want to achieve them. Also, remember to have a social life outside of work and training!”
Jess Harris, SCT coach at Dorney Boat Club
