Stanning ruled out of GB Rowing Team for Europeans

Heather Stanning, the 29 year old Olympic Champion, has been ruled out of consideration for selection for the European Championships on medical advice.

The European Championships are in Belgrade from May 30 – June 1 and the British team is due to be announced on Wednesday.

Stanning returned to training last November with the GB Rowing Team squad after a post-Olympic year spent on active duty with the British Army including a tour of Afghanistan.

Captain Stanning won last month’s GB Rowing Team Senior Trials in a pair with Helen Glover – the duo won Team GB’s first gold of the London Olympic Games.

In recent weeks, Stanning has shown some signs of fatigue in training. A decision has been taken to withdraw her from the Belgrade selection process and to drop back her training load.

“We have decided to take the pressure off, knock back her training and we think that will open the opportunity for a swift return to top form”, said Sir David Tanner, GB Rowing Team Performance Director.

“We are sure that Heather will be back on song soon. We will now consider our options in terms of the open women’s squad before finalising the selections for Belgrade”.

Stanning said: “I am clearly disappointed not to be travelling with the team to Belgrade for the Europeans and I wish everyone luck out there. I am still training and will focus on the programme I’ve been set to regain intensity at the very top end of the percentages”.

Stanning is from Lossiemouth in Scotland.
