Dorset School Games

Wednesday 2nd April saw 92 young rowers compete in an indoor rowing contest as part of the Dorset School Games, held at Canford School.

Pupils in Years 7-9 competed over 2, 3 and 4 minute individual races, as well as a 2016m team relay. The rowing was run by British Rowing staff and supported by leaders from Twynam school. Several club volunteers from both Weymouth and Westover & Bournemouth rowing clubs provided support to run the event.

Competing schools represented five of the six Dorset ‘SGO’ areas, with each school having qualified for this Level 3 event. The year 7 boys’ event was won with a huge score of 553m in 2 minutes, by Joseph Nalbantoglu (St Michaels school) which was the most impressive score of the day. Individual results, plus the finish position for the relay team were added together to give a team score.

Overall team results:

  • Year 7 Boys – Harewood College
  • Year 7 Girls – Colfox
  • Year 8 Boys – Harewood College
  • Year 8 Girls – Cranborne middle school
  • Year 9 Boys – Colfox
  • Year 9 Girls – Thomas Hardye school

Six schools in Dorset will be involved in a Sportivate project this summer, alongside local gig clubs. Active Dorset have funded this, with clubs running six-week Learn to Row courses followed by a schools regatta in July.
