A New Gig Rowing Club for Essex

Fixed-seat rowing in Essex is going from strength to strength, with the announcement of a new rowing section at South Woodham Ferrers Yacht Club. The club will soon take ownership of a 27ft gig as part of an exciting new project to offer rowing alongside sailing in South Woodham Ferrers.

“South Woodham Ferrers Yacht Club launched this new project aimed at bringing more people into the Club who don’t have a boat of their own to enjoy the facilities and the river,” said Doug MacEwen, Commodore of SWFYC.

“If you don’t know how to row – we’ll teach you in four lots of two hour sessions, first using a 12ft rowing dinghy then moving onto the gig. Our aim is to have the gig rowing at weekends and midweek evenings, or daytime if the demand is there and the tide serves.

“Members may then, if they wish, go on to join the Learn to Sail scheme at no extra cost – using sailing dinghies as they get more involved with our club”.

In conjunction with National Watersports Month, the club is holding an open day on May 17th, with rowing available as part of a FREE taster session.
