Tyne & Wear County Championships

The Tyne and Wear County Finals took place at Northumbria University on the 7th of February, and featured a fantastic turn out from all the competing local authority – including Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Four boys and girls from each secondary year group qualified from their respective area heats to compete at the County Championships. A total of 79 Boys and 84 Girls ranging from 11-18 years old took part in both individual and relay events throughout the day.

A day full of impressive rowing performances by all competitors followed, with three individuals breaking the County records; Year 10 Boys D.Graham of Gateshead who rowed 1431m in 5 minutes, Year 7 Girls E. Boyack Short of North Tyneside who rowed 496m in 2 minutes and Year 12/13 Girls A. McCarthy of Gateshead who rowed 2000m in 7 minutes 50.1 seconds to claim her fourth County record.

The top four boys and girls rowers from each year group have now successfully qualified to represent ‘Team Tyne and Wear’, which will go on to face Co Durham, Tees Valley and Northumberland in the Indoor Regional Rowing Championships.
