University Indoor Rowing Series 2012 revealed

British Rowing is teaming up with British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) to support this year’s University Indoor Rowing Series (UIRS) – a series of regional indoor rowing events for students across the UK. Expressions of interest are currently being sought from potential host institutions.

From Saturday 24th November to Sunday 9th December, university rowing clubs will host and organise indoor rowing events to form part of the 2012 UIRS. The events are expected to attract a range of different abilities, with races for elite indoor rowers and beginners alike.

BUCS medals will be awarded in the following categories (to eligible students):

  • Openweight Men / Women – 2km (BUCS points will also be awarded)
  • Lightweight Men / Women – 2km (BUCS points will also be awarded)

However, new for this year’s UIRS is the introduction of team, beginner, and adaptive races – ensuring that everyone can have a go, regardless of ability.

The new races for 2012 include:

  • Men / Women – team event (the top 8 individual scores from students from each University club will count towards the men’s and women’s team events) – 2km each
  • Beginner Men / Women – 1km
  • RowAbility (adaptive) Men / Women – 1km

University clubs hosting UIRS will be supported by British Rowing staff in planning and running their events, and clubs will be encouraged to open up the competition to participants outside the university rowing system.

Clubs wishing to host an event will need to be able to book a suitable venue, have access to Concept 2 rowing machines, have a volunteer team with knowledge of indoor rowing to help set up the venue, be able to market the event and collating results etc.

A request for bids will be published on the BUCS website shortly, however please contact Tom Gee at the BUCS office if you would like to register an interest in hosting the event and details will then be forwarded to you directly.
