Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club celebrates £46,816 of Olympic legacy funding
Since its formation in 2004 Flushing and Mylor Gig Club has gone from strength to strength with a current membership of over 100. They are currently developing vibrant junior and youth sections with a number of projects funded through ‘Sportivate’ The club welcomes newcomers of all ages, shapes and sizes with rowers ranging in age from 8 to 87.
Club chair, Simon Thompson, said: “We are delighted to secure the first Inspired Facilities grant, which will enable us to upgrade the quality of our premises. It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club for the 2012 Olympics’ legacy and will be a tremendous asset to the local parish and its community”
Local MP, Sarah Newton, said: “It is great news that the Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club will benefit from the Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund. It was an honour to present the cheque from the Fund to the Club on the 10th March, and to learn more about their plans to expand and enhance their current facilities.”
The Inspired Facilities fund is part of Sport England’s £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.
Flushing & Mylor’s aim is to build a new gig storage shed to house its three wooden gig boats together with a changing and toilet facility, briefing/training area and safety equipment storage. The current boat stockade is open to the elements with no other provisions and is inadequate to sustain or expand current activities.
Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This investment will create a fantastic sporting legacy for Flushing and Mylor. This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in Cornwall. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
The project is one of 350 local community sports groups who have been offered a total of £17.4 million in Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund.
