Tiffin youngsters take on the Thames
Tiffin Schools Boat Club (TSBC) is set to tackle the Thames this weekend, with 47 children and young people taking on an 89-mile marathon row.
The youngsters will set off from City of Oxford Rowing Club at 7.30am on the morning of Saturday 8 October, before rowing 89 miles and passing 31 locks on their way to a Sunday evening finish at Canbury Gardens Boathouse, Kingston Upon Thames.
The biennial OK Row event is aiming to raise over £6000, with £1000 going to The ME Association and the remainder being put towards new boats for the club.
Participants will range from 12 to 18-years-old, with a support team of parents and TSBC staff following closely behind in a safety launch.
“This is almost the only topic of conversation at the club,” said TSBC Chairman Shaun Ellis. “There is no way that you would not want to be a part of this event.
“Without the support of the parents and coaching staff this opportunity would not exist. I believe that all clubs depend upon the spirit within the club, and this event is definitely forging strong bonds and raising much-needed funds.”
TSBC coach Carol Cornell and Boatman and coach Dave White are also planning on joining the young crews on the challenge, in which the whole club is involved.
“Our goal is to transfer the energy and enthusiasm of the land training into on the water success,” said Cornell.
“This will enable the boys and girls to succeed in their challenge and raise valuable funds for new boats through sponsorship. It’s a tough job, but Tiffin are up to it!”
