Durham and Loughborough shine at BUCS Small Boats Head

Durham's gold and silver medal-winning women's double crews

Loughborough and Durham University rowing clubs shared the spoils at the 2011 BUCS Small Boats Head, taking two gold medals apiece at Boston Rowing Club, Lincolnshire.

The BUCS Small Boats Head has been staged on the River Witham since 2008, where it is run in conjunction with the first set of trials for the GB Rowing Team.

Loughborough’s single scullers stole the show for the Leicestershire university, with Jonathan Walton and Pippa Whittaker retaining their men’s and women’s single scull crowns.

Durham, meanwhile, claimed a one-two of their own – taking gold in the men’s and women’s double sculls.

Angus Groom and Callum McBrierty, in the men’s double, completed the course in 19:26.69 seconds – less than three tenths ahead of the second-placed East London crew.

Izzie Currie and Hannah Cannell (pictured above, right), meanwhile, took top spot in the women’s double – beating their Durham team-mates Jessica Budget and Rachel Martin (pictured above, left) into second place by 18 seconds.

Thirty-seven universities entered the 2011 Small Boats Head, with 10 winning medals on a close day of racing on the Whitham.
