Isle of Wight welcomes Explore Rowing

The Isle of Wight Rowing Forum launched its new Explore Rowing Project on Sunday, with a ceremony at Ryde Rowing Club.

The Forum – which consists of Newport, Ryde, and Shanklin Rowing Clubs – received seven coastal rowing boats from Explore Rowing; one quad, two doubles, and four singles.

This is the first time that the three clubs have worked so closely on a project, with the seven stable boats being shared across the clubs with an aim to increasing participation in rowing across the island.

Olympic gold medallist Louis Attrill MBE attended Sunday’s launch event alongside British Rowing National Manager Rosemary Napp, who was enthusiastic about the future of coastal rowing on the island.

“British Rowing has been delighted to work with the new Isle of Wight Forum to launch the Explore Rowing programme on the island,” she said. “The partnership between Newport, Shanklin Sandown and Ryde rowing clubs provides a fantastic opportunity for their local communities to take up rowing from the seashore and on the river.

“Anyone can row using our new stable boats, and Learn to Row courses will be offered throughout the year.” 

The clubs will now be running Explore Rowing courses with their new boats – which were built by Rossiter Yachts Ltd. in Christchurch, Dorset.

“We’re extremely pleased to have the Isle of Wight Rowing Forum as part of our network of clubs around the country,” added Explore Rowing Programme Manager Rich Stock. “I’m sure there are plenty of new and existing rowers who would love the opportunity to row in such a picturesque setting.”
