Finishing touches added to GB Rowing Team for World Championships

The finishing touches have been made to the GB Rowing Team for this year’s World Championships which is also the Olympic and Paralympic qualifying regatta.

Britain has decided to continue with the women’ s quadruple scull combination which took silver at the world cup finals last month.  This means that Debbie Flood, Beth Rodford, Annie Vernon and Mel Wilson, coached by Ade Roberts, will race at the event in Bled, Slovenia, from August 28 – September 4 with Germany and the Ukraine amongst the top contenders.

Frances Houghton, a world champion with Vernon, Rodford and Flood in New Zealand last Autumn can now continue her comeback from injury to top racing form in the single scull in Bled.

The women’s eight, coached by Atlanta Olympian Nick Strange, has also been named today as Alison Knowles, Jo Cook, Jess Eddie, Lindsey Maguire, Natasha Page, Louisa Reeve, Katie Solesbury, Vicky Thornley and Caroline O’Connor at cox. This means that the line-up is almost identical – with Solesbury replacing Olivia Whitlam –  to the crew which finished fourth in last year’s World Championships in a tight finish with the Dutch and in a race won by the USA.

Ro Bradbury and Emily Taylor will  travel to Bled as reserves for the women’s team.  Constantine Louloudis, George Nash and Tom Broadway will play a similar role for the men.

Broadway won World silver in the men’s eight last season whilst Nash and Louloudis took World U23 men’s pair gold in  Amsterdam last month, after earlier featuring in the top seven at the world cup finals.

Today’s announcement means that the 68-rower GB team will field boats in all Olympic classes – five women’s, three lightweight and six men’s – and three of the four Paralympic classes, all seeking qualification for 2012.  The team includes three international class lightweight boats, who will double up as reserves for their Olympic class counterparts if needed, and five non-racing reserves for the Open weight classes.

Late last month, Katherine Copeland, Kieren Emery and Peter Chambers were called up to the team for Bled after their gold medal performances this at the World U23 Championships in Amsterdam.

Copeland will race the lightweight women’s single whilst Emery and Chambers will contest the lightweight men’s pair

“These rowers have been selected on the basis of their excellent results over the weekend.  They showed that they have the ability to perform when it matters”, said GB Rowing Team Performance Director David Tanner at the time.

Copeland, 20 from Tees RC, will be joined in Bled by her coach James Harris whilst Peter Sheppard will now be there to coach Emery, 21, from Newcastle, and Chambers, 21, from Coleraine.

Chambers, of course, substituted into the lightweight men’s four at the senior world cup in Lucerne earlier this month and took gold there. He and Emery were also world cup silver medallists in Munich in May – an event at which Copeland also took a silver.

This year the World Championships double as the main Olympic and Paralympic qualifying regatta.

boats in the senior squad and add value to the GB Rowing
