Phyllis Court RC develops masters rowing
Rowing Olympic medalist and World Champion Debbie Flood will be presenting medals to winners at the Phyllis Court Rowing Club time trials to be held at Henley-on-Thames on Sunday 15 May, starting at 9 am.
The event takes place on a 600-metre stretch of the Henley Reach of the River Thames, alongside the club. Rowers both from Phyllis Court itself and from neighbouring rowing clubs will be taking part, racing against the clock.
Organiser Philip Foster said: “This is a growing event for local clubs in the area as we attract a wide range of rowers both in terms of ages and experience. The majority of our own club rowers, whose ages range from 40 to 70, have either started to row after joining Phyllis Court or returned to rowing after a few decades. It is a very good way to keep fit.”
The club, affiliated to British Rowing has developed over the last ten years and is now essentially a masters rowing club – ideal for novices wishing to learn to row and for lapsed rowers who have perhaps rowed previously at club level. The club now has about 70 members.
To be a member of the rowing club you must join Phyllis Court. The club house is located on the Thames, directly opposite Leander and the finishing line of the Henley Royal Regatta.
Members come from a wide range of backgrounds with ages from around 35 to the 80 and voice their appreciation of rowing as an attractive means of keeping fit, making friends and getting out into the fresh air. The club meets formally on Saturday mornings and Tuesday afternoons although rowers can use the facilities at other times.
