Join UWE and Bristol University Rowers

The University of the West of England and the University of Bristol rowing squads go head to head on Saturday 14 May 2011 from 12.00 to 16.00 for an afternoon of racing at the 17th annual Boat Club Varsity.

A highlight in the sporting calendar for both universities, the Varsity Series is an exhilarating mix of fun and rivalry for both competitors and spectators. Attendance is free and large crowds are expected at the Bristol Harbourside to cheer on the two teams.

The four minute race takes place over 1.3 kilometres starting at the Cumberland Basin on the waterfront, passing the SS Great Britain, Maritime Heritage Museum and the Amphitheatre. The best vantage point for spectators to view the race is at the Amphitheatre on the Harbourside. There will be refreshments and UWE’s highly-acclaimed Centre for Performing Arts will keep the crowds entertained with a range of performances including the Big Band, Sound of Soul Choir, Showstoppers and the Saxophone Ensemble.

UWE Boat Club President, Jonny Smith-Willis said, “Every year UWE’s fighting spirit is always on top form. The squads have been training exceptionally hard this year in preparation to be the Varsity Boat race Winners of 2011.”

University of Bristol Boat Club President, Patrick Vickers, said, “Both Bristol and UWE squads are training hard and hoping to take home the win. We look forward to welcoming people to the event to be part of this long-standing tradition, and to support the sporting talents of the two universities.”

Charity is at the heart of the Varsity series with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the charity PROPS, which provides opportunities and support for children and young people with physical and learning disabilities.
