Alan Campbell to row in City Sprints

World Rowing is proud to announce the 2011 Golden Blades of St Petersburg City Sprints regatta which will take place on 12 June 2011.

The 250 metre invitational City Sprints will be raced on the Fontanka River between the Belinsky Lomonosov and Pestel Anichkov bridges, in the historic centre of St. Petersburg. It is a splendid location which will allow participants and spectators to enjoy the cultural capital of Russia.

Organised by the Russian Amateur Rowing Association (RARA) the event is sanctioned by FISA, title sponsored by Gazprombank, Russia’s third largest bank, and partnered by Parmigiani Fleurier, the Swiss watchmaker of unique, hand-crafted timepieces.

The international turn-out of single scullers for the televised elite sprint races, reads like a who’s who from recent Olympic Games and World Rowing Championships: four-time World Champion Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand, GB Rowing Team leading single sculler Alan Campbell, and World Champion and Olympic medallist in the double sculls Luka Spik of Slovenia will all be competing in the men’s single sculls.

In addition to the men’s and women’s single sculls, a number of eights crews will also be racing in the international programme.

Matt Smith, FISA’s Executive Director explained: “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to be involved with this new City Sprints event in St. Petersburg. City sprints events allow us to bring our sport to the centre of the cities, to new places and allows us to present the stars of our sport to a greater public.”

This regatta is part of a concept of City Sprint regattas which is intended to develop into a series sanctioned by FISA over the coming years. Visit www.worldrowing.com/news for more information.
