Junior scullers enjoy a day out in Cambridge
Junior scullers travelled far and wide to compete at the Cambridge Champs Junior Sculling Head held on Sunday 27th March.
The event, in its fifth year, attracted 158 crews in boats ranging from J12 scullers through to J18 quads. The largest category was J15 2x with 15 boats competing over the 1450 metre course.
According to Event Secretaries Ian Brown and Sam Masterson, “the level of commitment by scullers across a range of ages and abilities was fantastic; for young novice scullers the race is a great way to get a first taste of competition”.
Especially noteworthy was the performance by Ben Marsden (Berkhamsted School) in the J181x event. An adaptive rower with cerebral palsy, Ben has rowed since 2008 but this was his first race in a single. This year Ben’s commitment to rowing was recognised when he was appointed as Student Master of Boats.
Much of the success of the event can be attributed to the safe and accessible environment of the River Cam. Clubs with young or inexperienced scullers particularly like the fact that coaches and supporters can follow their crews at close range from start to finish, armed with throw lines, but more importantly with encouraging calls and guidance from the towpath.
Next year’s race will take place on Sunday 11th March 2012. Clubs are encouraged to get entries in early.
