Junior Rower wins £2500 Arts and Sports Trust grant

Cambridge sculler, Angus McLuskie, has won a £2500 Arts and Sports Trust grant after being spotted in action by Sir Steve Redgrave.
    
13 year old McLuskie, a Junior Squad race team member at Cambridge’s Rob Roy Boat Club, was competing in the J12 Single Scull race at a regatta when he attracted the attention of Redgrave, who is a five time Olympic Gold Medallist rower.
 
‘I first saw Angus racing at Gloucester Regatta last August and was impressed by his determination and committment. Rowing is a fitness sport so I suggested to Angus that he consider getting involved in training with a crew,’ said Redgrave.
 
‘The Upper Thames Rowing Club coach, Richard Berkley, invited me to join and Steve endorsed my application for travel expenses to train with them in Henley,’ said McLuskie, ‘so I go there every other weekend now and often race in a double scull or a coxed quad. Upper Thames is a bigger club with other boys my age.’
 
Since training with UTRC, McLuskie has won head race crew events at Evesham, Marlow and Hampton. Rob Roy Boat Club chairman, Matt Castle, put McLuskie forward for the grant.
 
‘Angus is a very promising and talented young rower and at Rob Roy we like to be able to support and encourage all of our members to achieve their potential in sporting excellence. This grant will go a long way towards helping one of our junior members to achieve just that,’ said Castle.
 
‘I still train full time at Rob Roy Boat Club,’ said McLuskie. ‘My coaches in Cambridge are brilliant and the club has allocated me a special single scull to use for racing and training.’
 
Recent single scull wins for McLuskie with RRBC include two events at Cambridge Autumn Regatta and fastest junior men’s single sculler at Cambridge Christmas Head.
