Watkins and Grainger win Sunday Times Women’s Team of the Year Award

Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins have won the Sunday Times Women’s Team of the Year Award in recognition of their world championships winning performance earlier this month in New Zealand. They received their prize this evening at a ceremony in London.

Grainger and Watkins came top of the poll ahead of strong opposition from the England women’s rugby team and Commonwealth gold medallists Amy Monkhouse and Ellen Falkner.

“It’s certainly been a tremendous year”, said Grainger of the season during which she and Watkins have remained unbeaten in the women’s double scull and have also collected two world cup golds and a silver in the women’s quadruple scull.

“We’re such a strong women’s sculling squad”, said Watkins who collected her first world title with Grainger earlier this month at the World Championships on New Zealand’s Lake Karapiro.

Coach Paul Thompson was at tonight’s ceremony, hosted by Sunday Times Sports Editor Alex Butler, to see his charges take the award, as was British Rowing Chairman Di Ellis, on the eve of the squad’s return to training tomorrow for the Olympic season which will culminate in the World Championships and Olympic Qualifying Regatta in Bled, Slovenia, in late August 2011.
