GB RowingTeam visits Olympic Park and venues

Britain’s top rowers, back in the UK after their most successful world championships of all time, today kicked off their Olympic qualifying season with a trip to Olympic Park and the offices of the Organising Committee at Canary Wharf.

The tour took in many of the Olympic venues, both by bus around Stratford, and on a Thames Clippers boat trip on the Thames, as well as giving the rowers the opportunity to hear talks from the British Olympic Association and the Games’ organisers on the facilities and services that will be available during the Games.

With the World Rowing Championships and Olympic Qualifying event in Bled, Slovenia, now just ten months away the trip helped the rowers focus on the task ahead.

“It’s been a tremendous start to our Olympic qualifying campaign”, said GB Rowing Team Performance Director David Tanner.

It’s been a great opportunity to see the fantastic multi-sport environment that is being created in London and, with 18 months to go to the Games, it’s a timely reminder of just how close it all is and the excitement of competing in a home Games”.

“It’s been a really good trip.  We’ve learnt a lot about the Olympics.  It has made the Olympics feel more real and  that it is all going to come round very quickly”, said Alex Gregory, 2009 World Champion in the men’s four.

“It has been a fantastic day.  It has brought it all home to us that it’s just around the corner”, said three-times Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger.
