Sad news: Andy Holmes, Olympic gold medallist, has died

It is with great sorrow that British Rowing reports the tragic and untimely death of Andy Holmes, 51 years old, on Sunday 24th October.

Andy Holmes rowed at the Olympics in 1984 and 1988, winning a gold medal on each occasion.  In Los Angeles in 1984 he won Gold in the coxed four with Steve Redgrave, Martin Cross, Richard Budgett and Adrian Ellison.  Four years later in Seoul he brought home two medals, Gold in the pair, again with Steve Redgrave and Bronze in the coxed pair, steered by Pat Sweeney.

The thoughts of all his friends in rowing are with his family at this sad time.

Rachel Quarrell has written an obituary for The Daily Telegraph
