On 9th June, Sir Steve Redgrave, Honorary President of British Rowing, will set off on yet another challenge. If you’d like follow his progress or support either of his charities please read on..

“In June this year I am taking part in the world’s toughest endurance bicycle race, the Race Across America, in a team put together by myself. Most of us are old rowers, none of us are cyclists, so it will be a real challenge for the team.

The race is non-stop over 3,000 mile ride crossing from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland in just 8 days. There will be 100,000 feet of climbing across the Rockies and Appalachian’s, descents into deserts, and endless miles across the prairies and plains of 14 US States.

The team of 8 people is hoping to raise £100,000 for Sport Relief and The Steve Redgrave Fund, that’s £1 for every foot of climbing. The Steve Redgrave Fund aims to use the power of sport to bring about positive changes in the lives of disadvantaged children. The Fund currently supports indoor rowing projects in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Oldham, Sandwell and Southampton and has helped over 100 schools to purchase rowing machines. Training and support helps teachers maximise use of the machines and adds value to all areas of the curriculum, helping to improve confidence, self esteem and learning.

This is a phenomenal race, which only 60% of riders finish and I would like your support to help raise £100,000 for Steve’s Fund and Sport Relief –  that sum of money would enable the Fund to roll out its programme into a further UK city.

Donating is easy through our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/redgraveraceacrossamerica – please support this amazing effort which will help bring the benefits of sport to disadvantaged young people and their communities.

To follow our preparations and the race visit the Redgrave Crew website, follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/redgravecrew or join us on Facebook.

For those of you who have already donated I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of support for my impending cycle and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has so generously sponsored me.”
