Explore Rowing’s Generation Game

The Simmons Family, (front to back) Alan & Pam Simmons, daughter, Dawn Cowley and grandson Ashley Cowley, take to the water at North Muskham Riverside Festival in Newark RC’s Explore Rowing boats.Three generations of the Simmons Family took the opportunity to ‘Explore Rowing’ at North Muskham’s Riverside Festival on Saturday 26th June where Newark Rowing Club were demonstrating their new stable boats provided through British Rowing’s Explore Rowing programme.

The club ran three “splash and dash” races to show the local community just how wide a range of people rowing can provide activity for.  Dawn Cowley was among Newark’s adult beginners, taking part in the first race with her parents Alan and Pam Simmons.  Grandson, Ashley Cowley, joined the fun in the second race for the club’s juniors.

The final race saw the club’s more experienced rowers take to the water having qualified for Henley Royal Regatta the day before.  Alan was steering one of the boats in the first race, “I’ve always enjoyed getting on the water but had never thought of trying rowing.  When my wife and daughter tried it out, I was roped into giving it a go – I’m glad I was though – I’ve had a great time!”

Di Ellis CBE, Chairman of British Rowing, is delighted that rowing is attracting so many newcomers, “Rowing is such a great sport for all ages and Newark Rowing Club is bringing together people from the whole community into the camaraderie of a club.”

Dawn says she has one more important aim in rowing, “Now I’ve got my Mum, Dad and son rowing – I just need to get my husband in a boat!”
