CCPR Policy Updates April 2010

The April 2010 updates from the Central Council of Recreative Physical Training (CCPR) are as follows:

Alcohol licensing conditions

The Home Office has published the mandatory conditions for the sale of alcohol. These apply to all clubs with a Club Premises Certificate in England and Wales. Failure to comply with these conditions would at the very least lead to a review of the premises but could result in a £20,000 fine, imprisonment for up to 6 months or both.

Business rate revaluation

The 2010 revaluation of Business Rates begins next week, which could result in increased costs for asset-owning clubs up and down the country. The Chancellor has however announced a further extension of the Small Business Rate Relief, which some clubs will be able to access. For more information on whether your club will be eligible for rate relief, contact your local valuation office.

The Flood and Water Management Act

Changes in the way water companies calculated drainage costs – from rateable value to surface area –led to unmanageable increases for clubs in some parts of the country. Following concerted campaigning by CCPR and other representatives of the voluntary sector, a clause allowing water companies to set lower tariffs for surface water drainage for community groups was inserted into the Flood and Water Management Bill, which became law on 8 April. CCPR will now work to ensure that this provision is implemented.
