2010 Welsh Varsity Boat Race

The annual Welsh Varsity Boat Race will take place this Saturday (24th April) at 1pm on the River Tawe, Swansea Marina.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the event since its inauguration in 2006, when it consisted solely of senior men and women’s races. Last year saw the expansion of the racing to include the first novice races with men and women in their first year of rowing from both universities going head to head. The anniversary year marks another first for the event as crews from Swansea and Cardiff will descend on Swansea’s own River Tawe where the event is to be held for the first time.

Swansea will be no doubt eager to repeat last year’s victory, when after a disappointing 3-0 loss in the first three races, the Swansea senior men battled it out against their Cardiff counterparts in a nail-biting final race which saw the race restarted following a clash of blades a mere 500m from the finish line.  As a result the title of Welsh Boat Race Champions passed for the very first time from the firm clutches of Cardiff into the open arms of the ecstatic Swansea side.

The 2010 Welsh Varsity Boat Race, sponsored by Barratt Homes, takes place this Saturday at Swansea Marina, (behind Sainsbury’s). Racing begins at 1:00pm and the presentation of medals will take place at 4:30pm. Food and drink will be available from the Yacht Club.
