Greater Sport Champion’s Challenge

Greater Sport Champions Challenge

The second Greater Sport Champion’s Challenge took place at the weekend at the Wright Robinson Sports College in Gorton, Manchester.

The indoor rowing event was contested by 7 borough teams from Greater Manchester in Years 9 through to 11.

The event had some returning champions from last year including Harry Eccles and Mike Cross, Bury and Jess Leyden and Ashleigh Thornton.

All were able to defend their titles apart from Ashleigh who lost a very close race to Michaela Morris from Bury by just 6 meters.

Bury also went on to win the indoor rowing team event with a strong team of rowers fresh back from the NJIRC’s in London who placed four rowers inside the top 15 of three events.

The closest race of the day was in the Year 10 girls A Final where Jess Leyden of Rochdale had a comfortable win. Silver and bronze were contested by 3 rowers. Abbie Wilkinson and Carrie-Ann Ryan both of Tameside were just 1 meter apart at the halfway point. At the finish Abbie had just stretched to a 9 meter lead but a late charge to the line from Eleanor Kelly of Bury resulted in a joint bronze with Carrie-Ann.

All but one team went away with medals which demonstrates an ever improving spread of talent in the Greater Manchester area.
