GB Rowing Team’s Ric Egington named as Leander Club captain

Ric Egington, who won world championships gold in the GB Rowing Team’s men’s four last year and 2008 Olympic silver in the men’s eight, has been appointed Leander Club captain.

He has been talking about his new role and its responsibilities to Mike Parsons of the Warrington Guardian.Richard Egington

He told Parsons that the role was a “prestigious position and a real honour” and said that he was “really looking forward to it”.

Egington, from Knutsford, was a member of Warrington Rowing Club before moving South to participate in national training and is now a key member of the Siemens-sponsored and lottery-backed GB Rowing Team.

He will mix his Leander duties this coming season with GB Rowing training and competition. As as world champion, Egington is likely to be under consideration for a top boat in what could prove a fascinating battle at the head of the open weight men’s squad.

The season will be split between world cup duties in May, June and July and the World Championships in late October/early November on New Zealand’s Lake Karapiro.

Meanwhile, Egington yesterday joined the GB Rowing Team Squad, who departed for the warmer climes of South Africa to train there in advance of February’s assessment and April’s GB Rowing Team Senior Trials.
