Rowing coach wins BBC award

Rowing coach Bobby Platt from Coleraine has been chosen as BBC Sports 2009 Unsung Hero for Northern Ireland.

Bobby, who is 87 and has given more than 60 years’ service to rowing, received his award from Olympic rower Richard Archibald earlier in November.

Bobby Platt first captained Bann Rowing Club in 1959 and again from 1972 to 1983 but it was as a coach he excelled, nurturing several rowers to Olympic standard at Coleraine Institute.

Alan Campbell, the 2008 Olympic single scull finalist and world silver medallist in 2009, began his career under Platt.
