Blind sculler completes first stage of charity triathlon

Saturday 18th April was the first leg of a triathalon being undertaken by Dave Carter, head of sixth form at St John the Baptist School and Callum Russell, a student of the school and a blind rower at Weybridge RC. Their intention is for Dave to run the London marathon, Callum to row the same distance and for them both to cycle a double marathon on Callum’s tandem all in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Callum and his friend from Weybridge RC, James Coxhead, completed the first leg of the triathlon by rowing the round trip from Weybridge to Twickenham and back. Leaving at 8.15 am. in glorious sunshine they rowed steadily down the Thames through Sunbury, Molesey and Teddington locks before arriving at Twickenham around 2 ‘rowing hours’ later. After stopping for a quick lunch they were determined to match their time going upstream on the way home. They not only achieved this but just bettered it completing the entire trip in 4 hours and 8 minutes excluding locks and lunch.

So far Callum and Dave have raised over £2000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Thank you to everyone who has supported them so far. If you would like to support them please visit www.justgiving.com/callumcarterchallenge. A huge thank you must go to James Coxhead for his efforts in the bow seat and also to those who encouraged them from the Thames path.
