Sad news of the death of Sid Rand

The ARA is sad to report the news that Sid Rand died on Christmas Day, aged 74.

Sid Rand represented Great Britain with his brother in the double sculls event at the 1956 Olympic Regatta held on Lake Wendouree in Australia.  In 1960 he raced again in the single scull at the Rome Olympics.

Mr Rand is shown above (third from the right) celebrating with young 2012 rowing hopefuls in August this year at the flag-raising event at the River & Rowing Museum as part of the official handover celebrations for the Olympic Games.

A long time member of Upper Thames Rowing Club, he was part of a coxless four from UTRC which was one of the earliest crews to enter for the World Veteran Rowing Championships (the World Masters Regatta) in the early 1970s.

Our condolences to his family and friends.
