Last year’s Home International Regatta (HIR) was hosted by Scotland at Strathclyde Park, Glasgow, with England winning one out of the four events – the Junior Women. The home crowd were treated to wins in the senior men, senior women and junior men’s category, as well as a chance to watch some of the best athletes in the country compete against each other.

The regatta is a great way for many athletes to represent their country, gaining valuable experience on the international stage. Thanks to the Performance Talent programme, athletes in the England team have a range of support and guidance as they develop their skills and experience.

James Andrews, British Rowing Head of Performance Talent, says: “The Home International Regatta is an important opportunity for rowers and coaches to gain experience on an international level.”

For some rowers, the England Team is a pathway to the GB Rowing Team. GB rowers who have represented England at the HIR include; Laurence Whiteley (2012), Emily Ford (2013), Charlotte Booth (2014) & Charlotte Hodgkins-Bryne (2015).

Andrews is optimistic about the changes to this year’s regatta, hosted by Welsh Rowing at Strathclyde Park on Saturday, 25 July, “It’s going to be an exciting year returning to Strathclyde Park with the first opportunity to test out the updated regatta format allowing increased racing opportunities for everyone taking part. I’m looking forward to seeing the England Team face the challenge of the new format.”

The England Team trials will once again be held at the London Docklands in 2020 following on successful trials for both junior and senior rowers in previous years.

The England team will again run a mini-camp where athletes will have an opportunity to build speed in composite crews as well as giving rowers and coaches the chance to get to know each other before the racing. Tim Liversage, England Team Manager adds: “With this year’s changes to the event, the England team will begin our preparations by hosting a trial on Sunday, 12 July at the London Docklands. On 19 July we will develop our composite, ‘larger’ crews during a training day. After a strong showing from Scotland in 2019, the England team hope to match them out on the water in 2020 in the most exciting Home International Regatta yet”.
