The University Indoor Rowing Series (UIRS) provides fast and competitive racing across a number of distances. Events are designed for all, providing an enjoyable experience for both newcomers to indoor rowing and seasoned fitness enthusiasts. Each host institution is required to provide a certain number of national categories, with many choosing to run additional competitions for the local audiences near to their venue.

Following an application phase host venues were chosen from their detailed responses. The extensive submissions from a large number of institutions have allowed the series to be held throughout the country and offer a variety of competition to each region.

Loughborough University welcomes competitors from across the Midlands as the series starts at the UK’s no.1 sporting institution. This is followed by events at the University of Surrey and Durham University, before the University of Salford and the University of Leeds take centre stage. The second half of the series begins with a triple header at the University of Bristol, University of Reading and Queen’s University, Belfast, who all host on the same day. Bournemouth University close out the series with institutions on the South coast expected to compete, as well as the last chance saloon for anyone missing earlier events or keen for a second attempt to set a personal best time.

Once again, the UIRS will feature times set at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships in Glasgow, Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships in Cardiff, and the GB Rowing Team 1st Assessment which all feature a large number of university students. A total of 1,750 competitors posted a time within the 2016 series.

Institutions are able to enter their competitors into the BUCS Rowing Indoor Championships for inclusion in the governing bodies’ UK-wide competition specific for higher education students. BUCS points will be awarded on a national basis to winning competitors who have been entered to represent their university.
