British Rowing statement following incident on Tideway

A rowing coach and leading member of the rowing community on the River Thames, is missing following an incident on the river in Putney last night (Monday 2 February).

It is believed that he fell into the Thames from his coaching boat near Putney embankment at around 1920 yesterday.

A search operation led by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and also involving boats from the RNLI, Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit, Port of London Authority and the London Fire Brigade began at the time. A Police helicopter also joined the search.

The search of the Thames up and downstream of Putney is continuing but we regret that he remains missing this afternoon.

Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected.

An investigation into the causes of the incident has begun. That investigation is being led by the Port of London Authority – in close cooperation with British Rowing and Thames Regional Rowing Council.
