Intermediate Risk Management module now online
British Rowing has announced the launch of a new Intermediate Risk Management online learning module – available now at www.rowhow.org/course/view.php?id=130 for people with a RowHow login. The free version can be found here: www.rowhow.org/free/riskassessment/intermediate/.
Risk Assessment and Management are the foundations of the modern approach to safety. The skills and knowledge needed to understand, manage and assess risk are necessary parts of every rowers toolkit, and are fundamental to the good management of every rowing club.
British Rowing has developed a three tier approach to the management of risk, and will deliver training materials at these three levels.
The basic training is intended to give everyone an understanding of safety in rowing. It leads rowers to be aware of the things that could cause harm (hazards), the events in which harm could be caused (hazardous events), the safeguards that tend to make hazardous events less likely (barriers) and the factors that rend to reduce the severity of harm (controls). This training has been available to everyone for some time in the form of the Safety Basic Risk Assessment online module: www.rowhow.org/course/view.php?id=89 (free version available here: www.rowhow.org/free/riskassessment/basic/).
The Intermediate module in Risk Management is aimed to help leaders within rowing to understand risk and produce their own Risk Management Plans for particular activities.
It will also help them, when considering the safety of planned events, to come to a conclusion on whether it is safe to complete the planned activities, taking into account the conditions and the capabilities of the people involved. If they decide that it is not safe then it will help them to define an alternative, safer activity.
The release of the Intermediate module will be followed soon by the release of the Advanced Module in Risk Assessment. This is aimed at Club and Event Rowing Safety Advisors and others who need to compile a detailed Risk Assessment. This should be released later this year.
