Sunday League heads for nail-biting finale

Tees Rowing Club hosted the sixth round of the Sunday League in the North East on Sunday (3rd August), with both men’s and women’s overall tables now wide open.

The event – a skills challenge held over roughly 750m – incorporated a number of stations, including bow and stroke swapping blades and an emergency stop with rigger dips. Crews had two runs at the course, with times added together to give an overall position. Only the top four crews received points to be added to the overall league table.

The Tees even saw the Open league thrown wide open. DARC Dynasaurs (DUR) had led by four points going into the event, but saw their margin at the top cut to just 1 point as they failed to finish inside the top four. Wrekology (TEE) now sit in second place with 13 points overall, after finishing first with a time of 6:29. Tyne Young Boys (TYN) moved up into third place overall after finishing second with a time of 6:45. Durham will be keen to impress on home water in October when they hold their preferred Sweep event, but the league is still wide open as Tees Rowing Club attempts to retain the Open Cup for the third year in a row. They still have to overcome DARC Dynasuars, however, who will be going for Durham ARC’s first overall victory of either League.

The Women’s League proved just as exciting, with Teeslicious (TEE) moving two points clear of Tyney Temp-Oar (TYN) in the overall table. The Tyne crew had some issues with their buoy turn and backing on in their first attempt, which cost them a vital point in the League. The result means that we’re likely to be heading for a tight finish, with Tyne Rowing Club going for a first overall league win and Tees looking to take back the Women’s Cup, after Hexham Rowing Club’s triumph last year.

It’s all going to come down to the last two events at Tyne Rowing Club in September, followed by what will be an explosive final at Durham in October. Both will be ‘Splash & Dash’ events – one sculling and the other sweep.
