‘Memorable racing’ at Ironbridge Regatta

Last weekend’s forecast of thundery showers on Friday made for a fretful club as Ironbridge prepared for its 2014 Regatta on 28-29 June. However, the weather gods looked on favourably, with just a sprinkling of rain before glorious sunshine on Sunday.

Based on the River Severn by Ironbridge Gorge – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Ironbridge Regatta attracted crews from as far afield as Cambridgeshire, Liverpool, Llandaff, Oxfordshire and York, providing two full days of memorable racing.

The big winners of the weekend were Grosvenor, Huntingdon, Loughborough, Stourport and Worcester, with superb efforts from all involved and gripping races throughout. The last race of the regatta ended up being a re-row between Huntingdon and Welbeck College singles after a thrilling dead heat, resulting in a win for Huntingdon to top off their successful weekend.

Competitors ranged from juniors aged 12 to masters, with many high status crews taking part, making it an inclusive regatta for all clubs. Their efforts were encouraged by more spectators than usual whose deafening screams encouraged racing crews.

Umpires, officials and competitors complimented it as being one of the best organised regattas on the circuit. As a small club Ironbridge has to rely on dedicated members to put their all into the weekend, as well as the many months of preparation in its run up, and the generous friends and family who give up their time to help out.

The regatta has grown in popularity over the years, and entries had to be closed a full week early because of high demand. Crews who missed out will certainly need to get their entries in early next year to ensure their attendance.

Results will be available on the club’s website www.ironbridgerowingclub.co.uk, and news from the regatta and club can be found on its Twitter account @ironbridgerow.
