Sport England releases Active People figures for rowing

The latest Active People figures published today show some welcome recovery for participation in Rowing against December’s figures, in significant numbers across the sport, as measured by Sport England.

“Notwithstanding the drop in Sport England’s December 2013 Active People figures, the health of the sport is undiminished” said Neil Chugani, interim CEO, “It is very encouraging to see rowers back on the water and the summer regatta season in full swing.”

As soon as rowers were able get back on the water British Rowing has seen record entry numbers at many regattas, whilst its membership shows the participation of women and girls rising steadily year on year.

Another success story for the sport is the popularity of Rowability, British Rowing’s participation programme for people with a disability, with courses available at nineteen new centres across England this summer.

Rosemary Napp, Development Director, said “With the summer now upon us we have a great opportunity for our clubs to offer rowing for longer periods and provide the chance for even more people to try the sport.”

Participation is fuelled by the success of the high performance arm of British Rowing – the GB Rowing Team, and  British Rowing continues to work with Sport England to ensure every individual that our Olympic and Paralympic rowers inspire to try the sport are given the opportunity to do so.
