Berkshire Independent Hospital to back GB Rowing Team to 2017

The Berkshire Independent Hospital (BIH) is to provide the GB Rowing Team with medical services through to the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

For Britain’s medal-winning rowers, having such top-class support on the doorstep of their training base near Reading could prove priceless in the quest for future success.

The BIH, part of the Ramsay Health Care group, will provide diagnostics, scans and other general services for National Squad rowers with a quick turn-round time. Any information provided will support GB Rowing Team’s own medical services team, led by Dr Ann Redgrave, in their decision-making.

Sir David Tanner CBE, GB Rowing Team Performance Director, said: “If a rower has a problem in training, it’s important that we analyse the situation swiftly, wherever we are, so that action can be taken to support the rower and to minimise any time out of the boat. Every day counts in our quest to remain the top rowing nation in the world. I am very positive that our link with the Berkshire Independent Hospital can ‘make the difference’.”

Dr Ann Redgrave added: “Speed can be of the essence and quality delivery is vital. We are sure that the BIH is the best partner for us to have, and it is a significant bonus that they are based so close to our UK training location”.

James Barr, General Manager of the BIH, said: “We are delighted to be associated with and supporting the GB Rowing Team. We will be proud to help keep them in top form throughout the next three international seasons, including World and European Championships as well as during the Rio Olympic year.”

The two organisations have announced today that they will work together for three years in an arrangement that was triggered when double Olympic gold medallist Andrew Triggs Hodge opened some new paediatric facilities at the hospital last year.

James Barr, Sir David Tanner and Dr Ann Redgrave signed a formal Associate agreement at the team’s training base near Reading today.
