London School Games

The London Youth Games (running the School Games Level 3) brought an end to the 2012/13 School Games indoor rowing events for this session.

The event was split into two, with a Rowability event in the for competitors from Years 7-11 racing in three classifications. There followed an indoor rowing event for able-bodied rowers in the afternoon.

26 out of the 28 London boroughs entered into this year’s event, racing on 26 machines. In order to get through the large race program, each borough could field one champion rower for each individual event, and a team for the relay event.

The stand out performance of the day came in the Year 8 girls’ event, where Siobhan Samuel topped the results with a British Record of 842 Meters (112.3% GMT) – holding off the rest of the field by over 70 meters in the three minute race.

In a fantastically close race, the Year 7 girls of Annabel Zedda-James (Putney High School) and Chelsea Fashina (Townley Grammer School) managed to push each other over 106% GMT with Annabel holding on to a one meter win over Chelsea at the end of the two minute race.

But the closest race of the day was in the Year 9 boys’ event, where the top four results were seperated by just eight meters over the four minute race distance. It was Anthony Anderson (Radnor House) who eventually held on for the win over Anthony Duncalf (Cardinal Pole) and Louis Mack (Whitgift School), with Arun Jackson (Graveney Academy) just missing out on the top three places by two meters.
