School Games success for Oundle
On Thursday 12th July, secondary school students from across Northamptonshire converged on Moulton College for an Indoor Rowing contest at the Northamptonshire School Games.
With a host other tournaments held alongside the rowing – including basketball, hockey, football and athletics – the day was jam-packed with activity and a credit to Northamptonshire School Sport Organisers.
A grand total of 84 students competed in various rowing events, including 2012m team relays and individual races.
Schools from across the Northamptonshire School partnerships took part, including rowers from Corby, Oundle & Thrapston, Kettering, Northampton, South Northants & Daventry, and Wellingborough & East Northants.
All of the students, ranging from KS3 (years 7,8,9) and KS4 (10,11) boys and girls were very enthusiastic – bursting with team spirit and positivity. Points were accumulated from individual races and team relays in order to calculate the four overall winning teams, who each won gold medals and trophies.
The winning teams from the day were:
- KS3 (year 7,8,9) Girls GOLD – OKCMS: Oundle & Kings Cliffe Middle School, Peterborough
- KS3 (year 7,8,9) Boys GOLD – OKCMS: Oundle & Kings Cliffe Middle School, Peterborough
- KS4 (year 10, 11) GIRLS GOLD – Prince William School, Oundle
- KS4 (year 10, 11 BOYS GOLD – Wollaston School Wellingborough
Several of the gold medallists already had links with local rowing clubs, such as Oundle Town, and clearly put their rowing skills to good use to claim victory.
The success of the day has further encouraged students to seek out links with local clubs and opportunities to attend taster sessions on the water. It is hoped that this success of promoting the sport will continue across the county.
The rowing competition was organised by British Rowing HSCT coach Harriet Griffin and supported by Oundle Town Rowing club coach Richard Box and young leaders from both Manor and The Ferrers School.
