Historic Henley finale for Nottingham

Nottingham Rowing Club enjoyed its first win at Henley Royal Regatta last weekend, picking up the Wyfold Challenge Cup for coxless fours.

The victory is the first for Nottingham RC since the club was formed in 2006 – when Nottingham Britannia and the Boat Club merged – and adds to a number of success stories for the city’s rowers this season.

As well as their maiden Henley win, Nottingham RC juniors also enjoyed considerable success at the National Schools’ Regatta and will count two of their number among the GB Rowing Team rowers for the GB-France Match later this month.

At Henley, Nottingham RC’s Wyfold ‘A’ crew – one of three coxless quads send by the club to compete at Henley – faced a dogged ANC Rowing Club (Australia) crew in Sunday’s final.

The crew, consisting of Richard Watton, Matt Gotrell, Pete Muhley and Ed Mace, were behind the Australians for the first half of the famous course before driving forwards as they approached the enclosures.

By the finish, Nottingham’s lead was a comfortable two lengths – an historic win for the Midlands club.

‘We are so delighted,’ said Club President, Keith Atkinson. ‘It has been a fantastic Henley for us with so many of the members rowing and putting in good performances showing the club in such a good light. The win was the icing on the cake. Many thanks to athletes, coaches supporters and sponsors.’

Nottingham RC can now focus on its two GB representatives at the GB-France Match – Olivia Kay and Rowan Law.

Kay, who won gold in the WJ15 single sculls and silver in the Championship Girls quadruple sculls at this year’s Nat Schools, will represent Great Britain in the girls single scull.

Law, who also won gold in the J15 single sculls and silver in the J16 singles at Nat Schools, travel to France as reserve single sculler.
