‘CanRow’ launched at Eton Dorney

Athletes and officials converged on Eton Dorney last week to launch CanRow – a new initiative encouraging people to row, kayak, and canoe in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

The project aims to act as a hub for beginners and returning athletes, helping them find a club or activity centre in order to get involved in sport.

By providing information on courses, clubs, events, and competitions, and guiding people through the early stages of involvement in rowing, kayaking or canoeing, CanRow aims to ease the initial path between enquiry and taking part in sport.

“People often see rowing as an elitist sport and don’t realise how easy it is to get started,” said British Rowing Chairman Di Ellis, who was on hand to help launch the project on Tuesday 14th June.

“British Rowing is very keen to support initiatives such as CanRow which will help to dispel the myths and show that rowing really is a sport for all.”

Team GB kayaker Jenna Hawkey was the Athlete Ambassador at the CanRow launch, and spoke of her passion for the project.

“It is important that the Olympic Games inspire people from all walks of life and ability to get involved in sport. I love being on the water and initiatives such as CanRow really can help make hopes for an Olympic legacy a reality.”
