Surrey rowers complete 3,000km Ergo Challenge

[newsimage=0]Surrey’s Indoor Rowers took part in a one-off Row for Gold Ergo Challenge on Saturday (19th May), completing a 3,000km row as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations for the Walton and Weybridge Regatta.

Rowers and supporters from local clubs, schools, and businesses took part in the challenge, which saw teams of four competing in 12-minute relay races on Indoor Rowing machines at The Heart Centre in Walton-on-Thames.

A four-man crew from Walton Rowing Club claimed the prize for rowing furthest distance, with all the competitors’ distances going towards the 3,000km target – the equivalent of rowing from the London 2012 Olympic rowing venue at Eton-Dorney to Athens, Greece.

Members of Walton and Weybridge rowing club had already rowed some 2,500km in the run up to the event, leaving 500km left to row on the day.

With four rowing machines being used from 8.30am onwards by competing teams and intrigued passers-by, the 500km mark was finally eclipsed at 4pm.

Brooklands Radio were on hand to report the events as they unfolded, and interviews with rowers and spectators will be broadcast on Wednesday (May 23rd) 6-7pm and Friday 9-10pm.

The 150th Walton and Weybridge Regatta will take place on Saturday 26th May, with almost 1000 rowers competing in over 200 races.
