RGU upset the odds in Aberdeen Boat Race
Robert Gordon University (RGU) claimed a remarkable victory in the 17th annual Aberdeen Boat Race on Saturday – beating varsity rivals Aberdeen University for only the third time in the history of Scotland’s longest-running boat race.
The triumph was RGU’s second in four years, and club president Ruth Wright’s crew dominated from the off – eventually crossing the finish line four lengths clear of Aberdeen.
‘We expected to win, I don’t think everybody expected us to,’ she told BBC Scotland. ‘We pulled away and we knew we could do it.We are ecstatic. It was a brilliant feeling.’
RGU covered the 3km course along the River Dee in eight minutes and 13.9 seconds, besting Aberdeen by more than 14 seconds.
‘I’m disappointed but still very proud of the crew,’ said defeated captain Katie McPherson.
‘They worked extremely hard and had an excellent race. RGU were very strong but the whole of Aberdeen University are very proud of the crew.’
