FISA announces Canadian and Belgian tours for 2012

Canadian Wilderness Rowing Tour

FISA has announced two events for 2012 – the Canadian Wilderness Rowing Tour and the Belgian Urban Rowing Tour.

The Canadian Wilderness Rowing Tour takes place from August 25 to September 2 2012, and has been organised by the Ontario Adventure Rowing Association and Sudbury Rowing Club.

Sixty rowers in 12 coxed quadruple sculling boats will travel 180km on the 2012 tour, from Lake Nipissing to Sudbury, Ontario, via the French River.

This is FISA’s second Canadian rowing tour, and will take rowers from around the world on an action-packed week of rowing from the French River Delta to Ramsey Lake – the largest fresh-water, city-contained lake in the world.

The French River has been used for thousands of years as an aboriginal trade route, and its interconnecting lakes, gorges, rivers and rapids remain virtually untouched since early French explorers and missionaries began travelling through the area from Montreal in the 1600s.

The sights and sounds of the Canadian Wilderness Rowing Tour include areas of outstanding natural beauty, as well as an abundance of rare and endangered flora and fauna.

The tour costs $1500 Canadian (£962) per place, and applications should be sent to [email protected] for British Rowing endorsement no later than January 24 2012.

FISA’s other tour of 2012 couldn’t be more of a contrast to the Canadian Wilderness tour, as the Belgian Urban Rowing Tour takes another 60 intrepid rowers from Oostende to Tournai, via Beernem, Gent, and Oudenaarde.

The Belgian Urban tour, which also covers 180km in 12 coxed quadruple sculling boats, starts with an opening ceremony in Oostende, and will also take in the historic city of Brugge – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Participants in the Belgian Urban tour will enjoy a day off in picturesque Gent, where they will also return for a closing ceremony at the end of the week.

The tour costs €1,100 (£959) per place and, again, applications should be sent to [email protected] for British Rowing endorsement no later than January 24 2012.

Potential participants are advised to read the following FISA Rower’s Guide to Safe, Pleasurable Rowing, before submitting their application.
