Get Going Get Rowing Indoor Rowing Finals in Durham

240 rowers participated in the Get Going Get Rowing Indoor Rowing County Final held in January at the Maiden Castle in Durham. The competition, launched last year saw the culmination of a lot of training and hard work by students taking part from schools around the County Durham.

Over the last 6 months, 7,000 students in 20 secondary schools across County Durham have taken part in Intra-School competitions with the best rowers going on to represent their school in the County Final.  The students compete on rowing machines that are wired up to a live projection which creates a great spectacle and adds to the student’s excitement of the event.

Competition in indoor rowing is fun and it provides a great form of exercise, motivation and encourages competitive interest.

Lynn Fellows a parent of one of the competitors says:

“This is the first time that Chloe has taken part in this sort of event. She has only been indoor rowing since October and it has increased her confidence enormously.  She has had a great time and a lot of fun. Chloe is keen to continue with indoor rowing and this form of exercise and we hope she will have the opportunity to do so.”

The North East final event will be held in March and will provide the chance for our regions top young rowers from County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Teesside to compete against each other to win the title.

Simon Dickie, Youth and Community Manager for British Rowing says:

“It was great to see such a high quality event being run by a wide range of partners. They should all be very proud of what they have achieved. The young people did extremely well and if their happiness could be measured by the volume of cheering, then they were certainly having a great time!”

Since its launch the Tony Blair Sports Foundation has recruited and trained 39 new rowing coaches who all now volunteer their time in local schools and rowing clubs across the region.
