Cornwall Schools Indoor Rowing Competition

The Cornwall Schools Indoor Rowing competition was held on Wednesday 26 January 2011 with approximately 100 students competing from years 7-11 representing eleven schools across the county.

The standard of competitors this year was extremely high for county level, with 6 competitors scoring 100% or over. Five of these came from year seven. The highest score of the day came from Ryan Hessell of Cape Cornwall school, with 105%, rowing 536m in 2 minutes. Bolitho and Mullion schools each claimed three of the ten titles, Bodmin provided two winning rowers and Tretherras and Cape Cornwall each provided one victor.

Local rowing clubs also have links with the schools, coaching pupils
on indoor rowing machines and inviting them down to the water. This is an excellent way for clubs to support junior rowers and enhance participation. Some of the indoor competitors whom also row on the water include category winners Tommy Phillips (Cadgwith gig club and Mullion school), Emily Kneale (Looe rowing club and Bodmin school) and Morgan Bolding (Castle Dore Rowing Club and Bodmin school).

The competition was ran by the Cornwall Competition Managers team, British Rowing West Region staff, and hosted by Tretherras school. The next event is the UCP Marjon West Region Schools Indoor Rowing Competition to be held on 30 March at Marjon University.
