Rochdale win the Greater Manchester Champions Challenge

ARA staff ran the ‘I Love Me’ indoor rowing event at the Wright Robinson Sports College, as part of the Greater Manchester Champions Challenge. The rowing event, which took place on 27th June 2009, was raced between seven of the ten Manchester borough’s.

The event was for Year 9 and 10 boys and girls, each racing twice individually with a heat for seeding and an A and B final for championship points. Rochdale won overall supported from volunteer coaches from Hollingworth Lake RC, with Trafford in 2nd place and Tameside taking 3rd place overall.

The last race of the day (Year 10 boys) was the most exciting, with a dead heat for first place between Brad Hargreaves from Rochdale and Mike Cross from Bury (1461 metres in 5 minutes). Brad had been leading for most of the race but not more than 20 metres at the most, until in the final 40 seconds when Mike upped his game closing the gap all the way to the finish.

Full results can be found here.

The event looks set to continue with another challenge planned for next year already.
