Twickenham Regatta’s 75th event is a resounding success

Twickenham Regatta celebrated its 75th regatta this year over the bank holiday weekend and it was the biggest and best regatta yet, attracting over 220 entries to race.

2009 saw the inauguration of the Ian Rogers Remenham Club Victor Ludorum Trophy, to mark both the 75th Regatta and the 100th anniversary of the Remenham Club at Henley, which was won by Kingston RC, closely followed by host club, Twickenham RC.

The regatta attracted a high standard of crews for racing, further establishing the event as excellent two-abreast racing preparation for the gladiatorial arena that is side-by-side racing at Henley.

A number of clubs had great representation in a number of events. Furnival RC took the spoils in the women’s IM2 categories in both the coxed fours and eights, University of London were victorious in the women’s fours (IM3 and senior categories) and men’s IM2 eights and Thames RC continued their winning form from last year’s regatta with successes in five events.

Success for Twickenham RC came for the men’s first eight in the IM3 event, beating London RC by 1 and a ¼ lengths; the veteran men’s eight beat Putney Town by over 2 lengths and Jake Nelson took the the lightweight IM2 single sculls title over Swire of Eton Excelsior.

The spectators were treated to performances from the Richmond Youth Jazz Ensemble and the Twickenham Salvation Army Band at the regatta enclosure in Buccleuch Gardens and the Mayor of Richmond was on hand to present awards to winning crews.

Twickenham Regatta would like to thank its sponsors; the Rugby Football Union, the Remenham Club, Kay Plumtree, Mhairi & Ciera Pembroke-Pullen, Ross & Alice Smitheman and Hunter Penrose Supplies Ltd.
