HSCT Junior Rowing Day

On Sunday 7th December, a junior rowing day was held on the river Fowey by Charlestown rowing club and HSCT coach for Cornwall, Rhiannon Halliday. This was the first junior rowing session since the establishment of an indoor rowing club at Penrice school.

The school link has meant that over 25 children have been introduced to indoor rowing, having had little or no experience of the sport. A group from the school club, along with existing Charlestown members enjoyed a day on the river on what has to have been one of the coldest days of the year.

In the morning, rowers were put into mixed ability groups to introduce the novices to a Cornish Pilot Gig. Some of the more experienced under 16 boys also benefited from some coaching in a skiff. Over lunch in the sailing club, a rowing quiz was set which was won by Charlestown juniors led by Joe Bailey.

The afternoon saw the juniors mix up with the senior club members for some fun (if competitive!) racing in the gigs which rounded off a successful day. The next junior day is being scheduled for the new year. Thanks to all Charlestown gig club members who were involved.
