Rowing coaches, Jurgen Grobler OBE (pictured above) and Darren Barton (pictured below) both picked up awards at the UK Coaching Awards held on 17th December.  Chief Coach of the GB men’s squad, Jurgen Grobler picked up a High Performance Coach of the Year Award and Darren Barton won the Participation Coach of the Year.

[img_assist|nid=2522|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=240|height=320]Simon Dickie, ARA Youth and Community Mananger, said: "I am really delighted that Darren has won this award. Darren Barton is the Community Sport Coach based in Stoke on Trent. He works across a range of schools in the local area, as well as developing mass participation through indoor rowing. His proteges have gone on to win multiple medals at both the British Indoor Championships and the ARA National Championships. Darren is a dedicated and highly professional coach who has inspired the best from adults and young people in his local community".

Gerry Sutcliffe MP, Minister for Sport, praised all coaches and was glad there was a chance for them to be recognised: "Coaches are often the unsung heroes of sport, working tirelessly to help sportsmen and women achieve their best and win medals or trophies."

"The UK Coaching Awards recognises the achievements of coaches across the sports spectrum, from grass roots to elite level. It’s an opportunity for coaches to pat themselves on the back following a phenomenal year, not least for the success Team GB enjoyed in Beijing, but also for those that have helped moved things forward in school and community sport."
