Yorkshire Junior Scullers Camp 2008
The Yorkshire Region held its annual sculling camp over the weekend of 15 – 16th November 2008. The camp is supported by the Henley Stewards Charitable Trust and was organised by the regional Coaching Commissioner, Anne Homa, and the regional Junior Commissioner, Dan Clarke. It was also supported by the ARA’s Coaching and Development Team in Yorkshire.
Fortunately both days were blessed with good weather and the river conditions were excellent. The River Ouse had initially given some cause for concern as it had been in flood at the start of the week.
The camp itself was split between two clubs; the first day being hosted by York City RC and the second by Doncaster RC. Twenty four young people took part and received coaching from a wide range of coaches, including Alan Whitwell who delivered an excellent seminar on sculling techniques. The scullers learnt a vast amount over the two days and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. There was a general sense that they had come away having learnt a lot and could build on those improvements. Many of the coaches also welcomed the opportunity to receive mentoring from more the experienced coaches present.
Over the same weekend the Region ran its first Senior Sculling Camp which was also well attended with scullers from surrounding clubs and York University. The format for the weekend worked so well that the Region hopes to run a similar event next year.
The oraganisers would particularly like to thank all the coaches and volunteers without whom the camp would not have been possible, as well as York City and Doncaster RCs for being such excellent hosts.
